Low-income New Jersey residents in seven counties recovering from Hurricane Ida could be eligible for a helping hand from the USDA’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Secretary Tom Vilsack, Deputy Under Secretary Stacy Dean and Administrator Cindy Long today hosted a virtual listening session with 19 school food industry executives to discuss their critical role in strengthening access to nutritious foods for school meals programs, now and into the future.

Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that USDA is joining with students, parents, schools, communities and partners across the nation in recognition of National School Lunch Week, as proclaimed by President Biden.

FNS announced it has taken action against 28 Philadelphia retailers suspected of violating USDA rules for accepting SNAP benefits. Two stores are charged with trafficking based on an undercover investigation, 15 are charged with trafficking based on a data analysis investigation, and 11 are charged with selling ineligible items on an undercover investigation, which could lead to a six-month disqualification if FNS findings are upheld. 

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) announced a 23% increase, or $463.8 million in annual funding for nutrition assistance in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.  In fiscal year 2022, which starts Oct. 1, 2021, the Commonwealth will receive $2.5 billion grant for the Puerto Rico Nutrition Assistance Program (NAP). In fiscal year 2021, Puerto Rico received $2.038 billion for NAP.

USDA announced it will purchase up to $159.4 million in domestically produced seafood, fruits, legumes, and nuts for distribution to a variety of domestic food assistance programs, including charitable institutions.
