During today’s historic White House Tribal Leaders Summit, Secretary Tom Vilsack announced several new initiatives that expand USDA’s commitment to serving Indian Country through equitable policies and programs.

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service awarded $3.5 million to eight tribal nations for a project that, for the first time, will offer them greater flexibility in their administration of the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR).

FNS and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the CNMI Nutrition Assistance Program. The signing releases a $30 million grant for the Nutrition Assistance Program, with funds authorized by the American Rescue Plan.

Low-income California residents in six counties (Lassen, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Tehama and Trinity) recovering from the wildfires that began on July 20 could be eligible for a helping hand from the USDA’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP).

Today, the FNS Western Regional Office recognized outstanding WIC agencies in the region for the work they have done to strengthen breastfeeding programs in their communities. The recognition program is part of FNS’s WIC Breastfeeding Awards of Excellence program.

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service announced a 23% increase, or $1.86 million in annual nutrition assistance for American Samoa. In fiscal year 2022, which starts Oct. 1, 2021, the territory will receive $10.047 million grant for the American Samoa Nutrition Assistance Program (NAP). In fiscal year 2021, American Samoa received $8.185 million for NAP.

USDA announced it will purchase up to $159.4 million in domestically produced seafood, fruits, legumes, and nuts for distribution to a variety of domestic food assistance programs, including charitable institutions.
