Hawaii Launching New USDA Program This Year to Help Nourish School Children During Summer
To further address food insecurity in Hawaii and provide more equitable resources for island communities, USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service will provide a higher benefit to Hawaii families, as compared to the U.S. mainland, through the new, permanent summer nutrition program for children – known as Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer.

USDA Announces Approval of D-SNAP for Hawaii Disaster Areas
USDA announced that low-income Hawaii residents recovering from the devastating wildfires beginning Aug. 8, 2023, could be eligible for assistance from the USDA’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or D-SNAP.

Food Help on the Way for Arkansas Households Hit by Tornadoes and Severe Storms
Approximately 7,000 families in Cross and Pulaski County affected by recent tornadoes and severe storms will soon be able to receive food packages containing nutritious, high-quality foods that are 100% grown and produced on farms in the U.S. – known as USDA Foods. USDA approved the short-term measure to address an immediate need for food until a longer-term solution is ready to be put in place.

Reimagining SNAP E&T for 2023 and Beyond
Last month, 350 SNAP E&T state agencies and other partners from across the country gathered for the 2022 SNAP E&T National Forum. This year’s National Forum included 32 sessions covering a diversity of topics, such as SNAP E&T policy, building E&T programs in rural communities, and using a trauma-informed and anti-racist lens to improve E&T programs.

Cultural Relevance in SNAP-Ed: Let’s Get “Real”
Oklahoma Tribal Engagement Partners collaborates with sovereign tribal nations and tribal organizations throughout Oklahoma to tailor SNAP-Ed programming to meet the needs of Native families. Over time, focus groups have expressed what matters to Natives: the need to be “real.” As organizations look to develop culturally relevant programming, they must step back and listen to what matters to families.

USDA invests $6.5 million to improve access and equity in SNAP Employment and Training
FNS is providing nearly $3 million in grants to community colleges to expand the availability of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment and Training programs, known as SNAP E&T, and nearly $3.5 million in additional funds to state agencies to strengthen E&T program data collection. These moves are part of a larger commitment to advance equity and improve access to SNAP E&T programs nationwide.
